Entre los antecedentes más notables que dieron forma a la fundación del Partido Acción Nacional, se encuentra la decisión de José Vasconcelos de contender por la Presidencia de la República.
Uno de los pasajes más conocidos de esa decisión revela la participación directa de Manuel Gómez Morín con su propuesta de integrar un partido de oposición que diera continuidad y sentido de permanencia a una larga marcha para acceder al poder político, más allá de inquietudes y propósitos personales. Vasconcelos no aceptó el reto y prácticamente le dejó toda la iniciativa a Manuel Gómez Morín, una iniciativa que se materializaría a finales de los años 30 con la creación del Partido Acción Nacional, acontecimientos todos en pleno auge de la presidencia cardenista.
Era evidente que con la llegada al poder presidencial de la nueva clase revolucionaria, se tendrían pocas posibilidades de desarrollo para cualquier partido político de oposición al régimen imperante. Este clima adverso obligó a los primeros panistas a hacer de la sobrevivencia una virtud, virtud que con el paso de los años se convirtió en fortaleza institucional y puerta de una gran legitimidad social y política.
En el proceso de acaparar el poder, se incluyó al Ejército en el “partido oficial” con el fin de que la institución castrense jugara un papel estelar en sus filas.
El presidencialismo adquirió más fortaleza, además de que la participación del Estado en la economía fue cada vez más amplia y penetrante.
Resistir el peso de una maquinaria política en la que el partido de la revolución institucionalizada contaba con todo el apoyo del Estado, generó en la joven vida panista una gran cantidad de anécdotas cotidianas de heroísmo que en muchas ocasiones se quedaron en el territorio de la intimidad. Lo ocurrido en la capital del país seguramente tiene muchas semejanzas con la historia de Aguascalientes, sin embargo también son notables y muy claras las diferencias entre estas dos realidades, y lo son simplemente por el peso económico y político que tenía la capital del país.
